Positive action

Supporting programmes that have a positive impact on the ground

As marine biodiversity advisors we have a responsibility to pave the way in delivering positive, transformative change, and as such we lead by example and commit to supporting a positive impact project annually by dedicating 10% of profits from our advisory services.

Our aim is to support local projects that address the root causes of marine biodiversity loss and deliver positive on-the-ground outcomes for both marine ecosystems and local people. We prioritise work that places local communities at the forefront, ensuring that the projects we support promote local inclusivity and engagement, and deliver equitable and just outcomes.

We hope to inspire other businesses and our partners to deliver a similar approach. Striving for real change, together.

Our process

Our whole team is actively engaged in project selection, ensuring that everyone contributes to supporting positive actions.

We primarily seek to fund areas where we have built a local connection, for instance through historical project work. Programmes are developed alongside consultation with local organisations to target pressures on marine biodiversity or to drive active restoration, as well as considering how to enhance the diverse values of nature to people.

To guide our decision-making, we use a set of criteria to assess potential programmes to evaluate how a programme seeks to:

  1. Halt biodiversity loss
  2. Restore ecosystem integrity
  3. Promote transformative outcomes
  4. Adopt nature-based solutions
  5. Deliver positive outcomes for people
  6. Support local engagement and stewardship
  7. Help to address barriers that impede biodiversity conservation
  8. Deliver long-term positive outcomes
  9. Disclose and report on outcomes

Each programme we consider is screened against these criteria, placing us in a strong position to make decisions and identify a programme with the largest potential positive impact for marine biodiversity and local communities.

Projects we’ve previously funded

Supporting community-led seagrass restoration

UK
We supported the Cornwall Wildlife Trust by funding a citizen science project focused on protecting and restoring local seagrass meadows, involving snorkel surveys and installation of no-anchor buoys.

Supporting community-led mangrove restoration

Sierra Leone
We provided seed funding and advice to RAP in Sierra Leone to work with the local community on Seh Island to restore and protect locally degraded mangrove habitats, benefiting biodiversity and managing coastal erosion.

Coronavirus crisis conservation funding to Archelon

Greece
We supported Archelon, the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece, by funding their sea turtle protection and community engagement activities during the coronavirus pandemic.

Supporting sea turtle research

Tanzania
We helped fund community conservation officers to deliver sea turtle nesting monitoring in Tanzania via the local NGO Sea Sense. Our funds provided training, transportation, and livelihood support for local community members.

Improving safe drinking water to support sea turtle conservation

Ghana
We funded the creation of a safe drinking water supply for the local community, in return for their support for sea turtle conservation in the area.

Supporting Program Tatô to deliver sea turtle conservation

São Tomé
We supported 17 women traders by funding the purchase of equipment and materials to create handicraft products for sale at tourism points, providing an alternative to trading sea turtle derived goods.

Developing a community centre in the Mankoadze community

Central Ghana
As part of the local effort being undertaken to promote sea turtle conservation, we fully funded the development of a community centre in Mankoadze, which acts as a hub for trade, socialising, education and health care.
